Job Summary :

The Post Doctoral Research Fellow is a mature and motivated individual who is well trained in areas of cellular electrophysiology and confocal imaging of changes in [Ca]i in cardiomyocytes. Molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry experience would be an advantage. Work under limited supervision, with an advanced degree of technical proficiency. Capability to design, initiate and perform complex scientific research experiments performed by a Translational Medicine research laboratory. Ability to troubleshoot and evaluate data, and prepare final reports/papers based on experimental results. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

In the context of 2 NIH-funded research projects, successful candidates will investigate the cellular mechanisms promoting atrial myopathy and atrial fibrillation focusing on the role of IP 3 induced Calcium release, ROS and p21-activated kinase signaling, as well as inter-organ communication (Gut – Heart axis). We use animal models (transgenic, heart failure, IBD) with an increased risk for atrial fibrillation. Experimental techniques and approaches used in the laboratory include electrophysiological and imaging approaches from the cellular (patch clamp) to the organ level (mapping).

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for planning and directing experiments related to cell biology, biochemistry and immunology research. This includes the planning and execution of an assigned project; identifying and executing an original research project.

  2. Identifies an original research project, experiments, and potential research directions related to research activities; collects, evaluates, interprets and provides documentation of research data to accomplish research objectives.

  3. Provides own data collection, preparation of manuscripts, and research papers for presentation and/or publications.

  4. Maintains a safe laboratory environment and ensures compliance with governmental and University policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

  5. Responsible for animal handling and for working with animal tissues.

  6. The successful candidate may also be required to supervise Research employees and/or nonexempt staff.

Required Job Qualifications:

· PhD or MD with equivalent experience in laboratory work.

· Strong background in physiology

· Background in cellular electrophysiology, Patch clamp technique

· Expertise with live cell confocal imaging techniques.

· Expertise in working with relevant experimental models of disease (mouse, rabbit).

· Expertise in molecular biology would be an advantage (PCR, cloning, plasmid purification, RT-PCR), immunoprecipitation/Western blots and extraction of DNA, RNA and protein from tissue samples.

· Good communication, data analysis, computer and organizational skills.

· Enthusiastic, self-motivated, efficient, and interact well with others as part of a team.

· Must be able to work at a high level of independence.

· Good general health, manual dexterity and visual acuity; articulate with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

· Doctorate experience required with cellular electrophysiology, cell culture, confocal imaging techniques and animal handling.
