Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
Rush University Medical Center presents an exciting opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in Emergency Medicine. The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant functions autonomously in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals. The individual who holds this position exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform patient history and physical examinations.
Diagnose, treat, and manage acute and chronic health problems.
Prescribe medication, including controlled substances as delegated in collaborative practice agreement.
Utilize research and evidence-based practice to guide decision making to ensure the highest quality patient care.
Demonstrate advanced critical thinking in the care and management of patients.
Provide education and support to nursing staff, students, house staff, and other members of the healthcare team.
Consult other health care team members in collaboration with physician to meet patient needs, while ensuring continuity of care.
Provide education to patients, families, and community groups.
Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that establish and maintain professional relationships with coworkers and other members of the healthcare team.
Work to establish a relationship with the patient characterized by mutual respect, empathy, and collaboration.
Serve as a consultant and mentor to healthcare team members in solving patient or care delivery system problems
Current State of Illinois RN and APN licensure required.
Minimum of six months of clinical practice as an RN required.
Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing required.
Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner educational program.
Nurse Practitioner Certification from a National certifying body required.
CPR certification required.
Current State of Illinois Physician Assistant licensure required.
Master’s Degree required; Degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Studies training program required.
Current certification from National Certification Commission for Physician Assistants (NCCPA) required.
CPR certification required.
Skills and Abilities:
A high level of analytical ability is required.
Good interpersonal and communication skills are required in order to lead, teach, and interact effectively with healthcare personnel and families.
Knowledge of electronic medical records (i.e. Epic).
Ability to interact effectively with others in high-stress situations.
Work requires the ability to walk throughout the Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the day.
Work requires lifting or carrying objects 35-40 lbs. and lifting and positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs.
The ability to check documents for errors, use a keyboard to enter or retrieve data, and closely examine specimen, images, or reports is required.
Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and/or contact with potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents.
